Most "tropical houseplant soil" is too dense for the plants people actually buy it for. Aroids like Monstera, Philodendron, and Anthurium evolved as epiphytes climbing rainforest trees, with roots adapted to chunky bark and constant airflow. Pot them in regular soil and the soil compacts, holds water, suffocates the roots, and slowly rots them. The right aroid potting mix is bark-based, chunky, fast-draining, and humidity-retaining without being soggy.
Molly's Aroid Mix delivers exactly that. Coarse orchid bark and perlite as the structural base, expanded clay (LECA) and coir for moisture buffering, plus biochar, worm castings, and mycorrhizae, which colonize the roots and extend their reach for water and nutrients. What is aroid potting mix?
Aroid potting mix (also called aroid soil mix, tropical potting soil, soilless potting mix for tropicals, or chunky houseplant mix) is a bark-based, soilless growing medium engineered for aroids and other epiphytic or hemiepiphytic tropicals. Despite the names, real aroid mix contains no garden soil. It's mostly chunky structural material (bark, perlite, LECA), with a smaller fraction of moisture-buffering organics (coir, charcoal, worm castings).
A proper aroid potting mix should:
- Drain almost immediately when water is poured through it
- Hold its chunky structure for 1 to 2 years before breaking down
- Allow constant air contact with the root system between waterings
- Contain no peat moss as a primary ingredient (peat compacts and starves roots)
If a product labeled "tropical potting soil" feels heavy and dense out of the bag, it's the wrong product. A real aroid mix feels light, chunky, and audibly bark-like when you pour it.

- Philodendron (Pink Princess, Birkin, Brasil, Micans, climbing and self-heading types): all benefit from the chunky structure.
- Anthurium (clarinervium, crystallinum, warocqueanum, regale): velvet-leafed types are particularly sensitive to root rot in dense soil.
- Pothos, Scindapsus, Epipremnum: trailing aroids that thrive in chunky mixes.
- Alocasia and Colocasia: heavy feeders that still want fast drainage.
- Calathea, Maranta, Stromanthe, Ctenanthe: prayer plants benefit from the humidity retention without root saturation.
- Syngonium, Aglaonema, Spathiphyllum, ZZ plant, Sansevieria: classic indoor tropicals, all suited.
- Hoya: semi-epiphytic, prefers this style of chunky mix over standard houseplant soil.
- Fiddle Leaf Fig, palms, ferns: work well in this mix with slightly more frequent watering than aroids.
